Shakira

Time magazine has named Colombian singer Shakira as a candidate for its 2012 list of “100 most influential people,” said the publication.

Shakira:
Age: 35
Occupation: Singer, philanthropist

Few recording artists have bridged Latin America and the rest of the world as effectively as Shakira. Her eclectic brand of Latin pop has made her famous around the globe. And now she’s become a Bono-like figure in a region that desperately needs one. Shakira’s ALAS Foundation has done more than dole out charity — it has inspired reluctant Latin moguls, not known for their generosity, to get on board with meaningful projects in areas like education and initiatives that promote early childhood development.

Immigration Advocates Rally for Change Across U.S.

Protesters gathered around the country on Saturday, including in Washington, criticizing an Arizona immigration law and calling for a federal overhaul.

WASHINGTON — Demonstrators gathered on Saturday for dozens of protests across the country, hoping anger over a tough anti-illegal immigration law in Arizona would add momentum to their call for Congress to act on an immigration overhaul.

Large May Day rallies were called in Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Milwaukee, Chicago and here in Washington, D.C., with smaller events planned in about 70 places around the country. Organizers predicted the reaction to the Arizona law would increase the numbers of protesters turning out to vent frustration with Washington for the lack of progress on immigration legislation.

The protests added to a widening wave of response to the Arizona law, with government agencies and organizations in other states canceling business in Arizona, and the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, a large African-American organization, canceling plans to hold its annual convention in Phoenix in July.

Shakira’s Colombian War

Shakira's Colombian war - Zina SaundersThe Latin pop star on why she’s spending millions on schools in her home country and beyond.

Shakira—born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll—is intent on making her advocacy work as well-known as her hips. Her cause? Educating impoverished children by building schools and community centers in some of the poorest neighborhoods in her native Colombia, and convincing other Latin American leaders to invest in early childhood education…

She knows about deprivation from her own upbringing in the extremely stratified city of Barranquilla, where I also grew up. Located on the Caribbean side of Colombia, nearly 50% of people in this port live under the poverty line. More than 43% of children do not have access to early education, and less than 20% have access to the Internet.

The event will be held at the World Bank’s Washington D.C headquarters on Monday, February 22 at 1pm EST. It will be streamed live on this website and our partners websites’ ALAS and Shakira.com. Latin American and Caribbean authorities from the education sector, ambassadors and representatives from international organizations have been invited to witness the signing of the partnership agreement between Shakira’s ALAS foundation, Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the World Bank.
