Internationally-renowned artist Shakira and World Bank Group President Robert B. Zoellick will launch Monday a US$300 million joint initiative aimed at expanding development programs for young children in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The “Early Childhood Initiative: An investment for life” seeks to mobilize policy makers, public opinion, and resources towards the adoption of Early Childhood Development programs in the region, which have proven to be critical in helping kids achieve their full potential in life.
The event will be held at the World Bank’s Washington D.C headquarters on Monday, February 22 at 1pm EST. It will be streamed live on this website and our partners websites’ ALAS and Shakira.com. Latin American and Caribbean authorities from the education sector, ambassadors and representatives from international organizations have been invited to witness the signing of the partnership agreement between Shakira’s ALAS foundation, Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the World Bank.
The initiative, together with the Early Childhood Development Secretariat for Latin America and the Caribbean, will present new policy options to the Millennium Development Goals Summit 2010 (scheduled for September, 2010) and the XX Ibero-American Summit, which will take place in Argentina later this year.
